Who are the Malakhi?
In the first episode of Ash & Flame readers meet the angel, Ithuriel. The survivors of Haven often refer to him as ‘The Spear’, one of the Malakhi. He is powerful, a hunter of demons, the tip of his spear like a glowing sun.
But just who, or what, are the Malakhi?
Researching angels, including the ones that fell, makes for some fascinating reading, even if you’re not a religious person. Most of my reference material was taken from the Apocrypha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, including 1 Enoch. These are books not included in the Bible, for various reasons, but if I wanted to include named angels and demons in my series, the scrolls had to feature prominently in my research (as well as the Kabbalah, where Ithuriel originated).
You see, the Bible only mentions three angels by name: Michael, Gabriel and Satan. Those are such popular and familiar entities that I knew I wanted to try something different. I didn’t want to tell the story of an end times that everyone had already read or knew.
So, influenced by the Apocrypha and other works, I came up with my own vision of what the end of the world would look like. I classified the angels by their Hebrew name, Malakhi, which means ‘messenger’. These are the guardians of humanity, and the archangels (Adonai) that lead them. The Malakhi counted in the thousands, but after the war between Heaven and Hell finally erupted on earth, their numbers have dwindled.
Of the Malakhi you have met Ithuriel, but only briefly. In future episodes you will learn more about Ithuriel and his struggles, and just what he means to the human survivors of Haven. You will meet other Malakhi, beings created by divine purpose, and discover what they have been given. And what has been taken away.
And what they fight against.
